With senior living, first impressions begin before someone walks through the front door. From the landscaping and building exterior to the lighting, cleanliness, and overall appearance, every detail tells a story. A well-maintained community helps residents, families, and visitors feel welcomed, comfortable, and confident in their surroundings.
As Plant Operations Director at The Boulevard of St. Charles, I believe first impressions are our introduction to residents, families, and visitors. When our building and grounds look clean, fresh, and cared for, they send an important message. They show that we take pride in our community and the people who call it home.
A positive first impression also helps build confidence. Families want to know their loved ones live in an environment where comfort, safety, and attention to detail matter.

For me, being tour-ready means keeping the entire community clean, welcoming, and well-maintained. A building does not have to be brand-new to make a positive impression. Consistent care can make an older building feel inviting and comfortable.
Our team members also contribute to that experience. A professional appearance, friendly greeting, and welcoming attitude help visitors feel comfortable. Being tour-ready means preparing both the people and the property, inside and out.
Maintaining an older community does bring challenges. After 10 years, some of our original paint has faded. Standard touch-ups do not always blend with the existing color and can become more noticeable.
Larger painting projects are needed throughout the building, particularly in memory care. Damaged trim also requires attention in several areas. We are working on plans to address these concerns while maintaining our daily standards.
Landscaping requires a similar balance. I evaluate our grounds based on community expectations and overall appearance. Larger improvements must also account for budgets, approvals, and existing irrigation concerns.
In the meantime, we work with our landscaping company to identify smaller improvements that fall within our current service agreement. This allows us to make progress while planning for larger needs.
Lighting is another important priority. Well-lit entrances and parking areas help residents, families, and team members feel more secure after dark. Good lighting also creates a warmer, more inviting appearance.
Although lights occasionally burn out, they should never remain out of service for an extended period. Prompt attention helps maintain both the appearance and functionality of our community.
One of our simplest and most effective First Impressions practices is completing regular exterior walkthroughs.
Several times each week, I walk the property looking for litter and small maintenance concerns. These checks allow us to address issues before they affect the overall appearance of the grounds.
Even small pieces of trash can create a poor impression. Keeping walkways, entrances, and outdoor spaces clean helps show that we pay attention to the details.
This practice is easy for other Plant Operations Directors to implement. It does not require a major project or additional investment. It simply requires making exterior checks a consistent part of the weekly routine.
For me, first impressions are not about having a perfect building. They are about taking pride in what we have, recognizing areas that need improvement, and following through.
By maintaining our surroundings and addressing concerns as resources allow, we help create a welcoming environment at The Boulevard of St. Charles. Every small improvement contributes to the confidence and comfort of the people who visit, work, and live here.
