Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Christy Dickerson, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.

Their willingness to reach out matters. They share their experiences and invite others into community life. In doing so, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at Boulevard St. Charles, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Creating a Warm and Supported Transition

A successful move-in experience happens when a new resident feels welcomed, comfortable, and supported. At Boulevard St. Charles, that begins with a warm greeting on move-in day. It continues with visits from community directors during the resident’s first week.

Those first days help set the tone for life in the community. New residents are learning new routines and meeting new people. They are also becoming familiar with common areas, dining spaces, and events. Friendly support nearby can make those early moments feel less overwhelming.

Resident Ambassadors play an important role in that welcome. During Ambassador meetings, residents talk about what helped them feel comfortable when they first arrived. They use that insight to support new neighbors in the same thoughtful way. Ambassadors invite new residents to meals, introduce them to others, and offer tours. These gestures help new residents become familiar with amenities and shared spaces.

Fostering Confidence, Safety, and Belonging

Some of the most meaningful welcomes are simple and personal. Ambassadors invite new residents to dine with them. They encourage them to attend New Resident Orientation. They also help them feel more comfortable joining community events.

Ambassadors take time to explain what to expect at activities and gatherings. That guidance can help new residents feel more confident participating. They also serve as wonderful representatives during tours. They greet prospective residents, share their experiences, and help others picture themselves as part of the community.

One meaningful example involved a resident who had difficulty locating her apartment. The ambassadors stepped in with patience and care. They made sure she could find her way back after meals and community events. They also helped ensure she entered her apartment safely and comfortably.

Their attentiveness made a lasting difference. With steady support, the resident felt more secure and cared for. That reassurance helped her adjust to her new surroundings.

New residents often feel more comfortable speaking with current residents. Current residents understand the move-in experience firsthand. They know the emotions, questions, and challenges that can come with the transition. Peer-to-peer relationships offer reassurance, trust, and practical support in a natural way.

Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of the community because they genuinely love living there. They are enthusiastic, friendly, and passionate about helping others feel welcome. They share their experiences, offer support, and build meaningful connections. Through those efforts, they help foster happiness and a true sense of belonging.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
