Every great meal starts with someone who cares.
Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.

As Culinary Director at The Boulevard St. Charles, my path to senior living started with a search for better work-life balance. After several years, I left to pursue other opportunities. Over time, I realized those roles did not feel as fulfilling.
That realization brought me back. The driving force behind that decision was the residents. Their personalities, stories, and daily presence made this work feel meaningful in a way traditional restaurant work did not.
Residents have also taught me something important about life. People do not grow up and mature in the way I once imagined when I was younger. At heart, they are still the same silly, strange, and wonderful people they have always been.
That perspective changes the way I see each meal. Food becomes more than service. It becomes a chance to connect with people who bring humor, personality, and life experience to the table every day.
One favorite tradition is Candlelight Dinners. These events give the culinary team a chance to show what they can do. They also give residents an opportunity to try something special they may not experience otherwise.
Success in a senior living dining program takes patience and understanding. The food matters, of course. Still, customer service is just as important, if not more important, than the meal itself.
This work requires listening. It also takes the ability to receive feedback with grace. Sometimes that feedback is constructive. Other times, it may not feel constructive at all. Either way, it is important to hear residents and respond with care.
One moment made the impact of this work especially clear. After a resident passed away, one of their family members came to share a thank-you. They said the meals had been a bright spot in their loved one’s day.
That message stayed with me. It showed that a meal can bring comfort during difficult times. It can also remind families that their loved one was cared for and valued.
In this work, the smallest moments can matter deeply. A favorite meal, a kind word, or an extra effort can become part of someone’s day in a meaningful way. That is what makes dining in senior living so personal.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
